New-Home Sales Drop in October to Much Lower Level Than Expected

The numbers: U.S. new-home sales fell 5.6% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 679,000 in October, from a revised 719,000 in September, the government reported Monday.

Analysts polled by the Wall Street Journal had forecast new-home sales to occur at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 725,000 in October 2023.

The data are often revised sharply. Sales in September were initially reported at 759,000.

Home-Price Growth Accelerated in November

Home-price growth accelerated in November as the inventory of homes for sale remained unusually low.

The S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller National Home Price Index, which measures home prices across the nation, rose 5.1% from a year earlier in November, compared with a 4.7% annual increase the prior month.

On a month-over-month basis, the index rose a seasonally adjusted 0.2% in November.
